Sofa upholstery for homes with pets and children

For a busy household, upholstery is a choice about daily use and care as much as color. Start with the cleaning instructions for the actual fabric and the way your household uses a sofa. No fabric should be treated as a universal promise against spills, claws, wear or stains, even when a product is described as easy-care.

Ask for the actual fabric and care information

Find the manufacturer’s label or care documentation for the piece you are considering. A photo cannot reliably tell you the fiber content or whether a surface is leather. Ask the store to identify what the tag supports and where the cleaning instructions are recorded. If information is missing, treat that as an unanswered question rather than filling the gap with a guess.

Cleaning codes and care directions affect what products and methods may be suitable. Follow the specific instructions and any prescribed testing process. Do not assume a household cleaner, steam machine or method that worked on a previous sofa is safe for another cover. Manufacturer guidance, such as La-Z-Boy’s upholstery care information, illustrates why the cover must be identified first; it does not establish which brands LQ currently has.

Think about texture and the tasks you repeat

Look closely at the surface and seams. Consider how your pet’s hair appears against the color, how easy routine cleaning seems and whether the texture suits your household. Ask about the documented care needs instead of assuming a darker fabric hides everything or a smooth surface cannot scratch.

Tell the floor team what matters most: children eating nearby, a pet that sheds, frequent visitors or a sofa used every evening. Those details make a comparison more useful than a broad request for the most durable option. Try the seating as well; a practical cover is only one part of choosing a sofa you will use comfortably.

Check what can be removed and cleaned

A zipper does not automatically mean a cover is machine washable. Ask whether the manufacturer permits removal, what cleaning method is specified and whether cushion covers must remain on during professional cleaning. Confirm the care instructions before buying replacement covers or planning to wash them at home.

If a protection plan or warranty is offered, request its written terms. Ask about exclusions, required care and how claims work. Do not substitute a verbal description such as stain-resistant for the actual terms, and do not assume all accidental damage is covered.

Bring the care questions with your measurements

Compare the specific item’s label, condition, seating fit and dimensions together. Bring photographs or a color sample from your room if helpful. Confirm the available piece and price with the store before making transport arrangements.

Explore sofas and sectionals, review the floor photos, or contact LQ with the photo reference. Plan a store visit to compare the pieces in person.
