Will a recliner fit? Clearance and access checklist

By The LQ Furniture floor team ·

Brown reclining sofa and recliner photographed on the LQ floor

A recliner needs more space than its upright footprint. Before choosing one, check the chair in every position you intend to use, the route into the room and any power requirements. There is no single wall-clearance number that works for every recliner. Use the dimensions and instructions for the actual model.

Measure the chair in use, not just at rest

Write down the available width and depth in the room, then identify the space behind and in front of the chair. Ask for the recliner’s upright dimensions, fully extended depth and required clearance from nearby objects. Include the movement of a swivel or rocking model if applicable. A chair can fit when closed and still block a walkway when someone reclines.

Mark the proposed footprint with removable tape and check it against the room’s normal activities. Can someone pass without stepping over the footrest? Can nearby doors and drawers open? Is there space beside the chair to operate the controls? Keep children, pets and loose objects away from moving mechanisms, following the manufacturer’s instructions.

Follow the whole route into the room

Measure the narrowest doorway opening, hall width and any tight turns, not just the destination. Include stair landings, door hardware and overhead restrictions. Take photographs of difficult transitions so you can explain them in the store. The diagonal turn through a hallway may be the limiting point even when the front door looks wide enough.

Ask whether the manufacturer permits any part to be removed for transport and what the resulting dimensions are. Do not assume that every recliner back detaches, or that removing it makes the rest light enough to move safely. Confirm handling requirements and who is responsible for moving and reassembly before arranging pickup.

Plan power access before choosing a powered model

Locate the intended outlet and ask how the cord should be routed for the specific chair. Keep the route clear of the mechanism and normal foot traffic. Follow the operating instructions about electrical connections instead of assuming an extension cord or an accessory battery is suitable.

If a power feature matters to you, ask for a demonstration and confirm what is included with the photographed piece. A picture does not establish the exact model, accessories, condition or available quantity. Bring your measurements to the floor and check the tag and instructions together.

Bring a short fit checklist

  • Room width and available fully reclined depth.
  • Narrowest doorway, hallway turn and stair measurements.
  • Outlet position and photographs of access restrictions.
  • Questions about model-specific clearance, controls and transport.

See the floor photos, then ask about current availability before making a special trip. LQ’s photos show actual floor pieces, but availability and details need confirmation. Plan your visit and bring the measurements with you.
